Matsubara, Mary
Mary Matsubara was the best mom ever.
As a child, Mary was outgoing, played softball, was voted “Snow Princess”, and sought all the excitement and entertainment life had to offer. She grew up as an Air Force Base Commander’s daughter in a large family with her two sisters – Nancy and Linda and a brother - Paul. According to her father Herb, she was “very social” and a hard-worker.
Mary was an ambitious and beautiful young woman when she moved far from her nest in Columbus, OH to the west coast looking for freedom and adventure. She found that and much more when she met Kaz Matsubara and fell in love with the one guy that pretended to ignore her. After only a few months, this unlikely and very opposite couple got married in their one-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles and stayed together for 29 years. With love, respect, and patience…a lot of patience, they made it over every single hurdle and enjoyed all the good times together. This March 22nd would have been their 30th Wedding Anniversary. She realized her purpose in life when she gave birth to her two children – Susan and Matthew. They brought her the greatest joy in her life…and the greatest stress as they inherited her spirit. The love and support she gave her family was true and unwavering.
Mary was so brave and so positive through her battle against cancer since October 2009 and told her oncologist to “throw everything but the kitchen sink at it” for the chance to spend more time with her family. She stubbornly fought the cancer all the way to the end until it was time for her to go, which happened very peacefully with her family right by her side. She touched many lives by helping people and sticking up for those who needed it. Although her life was cut too short, her goal in life was achieved, which was to be the best mom ever.
As a working mom, she faced all the challenges at both home and work. She was there to make prom dresses, patch torn clothes, wrangle a busy family around a dinner table, endure her husband’s latest golf or exercise invention…left in the living room, and provide all the “free advice” she could give. Life was not easy on Mary Matsubara, but when you give everything you’ve got to your family like she did, it never is.
Other family members she loved very much include: her father Herbert W. Moore, her brother Paul Moore, her sister Nancy Jones, her late sister Linda Moore, and their families. Also, Sandy – her most loving and special dog.
She was born on May 2nd, 1950 in Macon, GA and died in her home in Lexington, KY this past Thursday, March 4th, 2010 at the age of 59.
